The Mayor of London Boris Johnson awarded HRH Princess Badiya bint El Hassan of Jordan the inaugural Naz Legacy Foundation Honorary Education Fellowship at the Annual Naz Legacy Foundation Reception yesterday evening, in recognition of her work as Founder Chairman of HRH The Prince of Wales’ Mosaic programme.
HRH The Prince of Wales made the announcement via a recorded video message and spoke of his pleasure in having the opportunity to congratulate the Naz Legacy Foundation on its work to promote excellence in education and how grateful he is that one of the three charitable causes supported by the Foundation is The Prince’s own Mosaic initiative.
Mosaic is a Business in the Community initiative which connects young people with experienced professional mentors.
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London commented on the event: “I enjoyed congratulating everyone at the Naz Legacy Foundation for the fantastic work they do in supporting a fantastic mentoring charity like Mosaic, it is much appreciated.”
The event, held at London’s prestigious Living Room at City Hall, brought together over 175 leading educationalists, philanthropist and politicians to celebrate the legacy of Naz Bokhari, the first Muslim headteacher in the UK. Other speakers included the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Rt Hon Ed Davey, Attorney General Rt Hon Dominic Grieve MP, Deputy Mayor Sir Edward Lister, Lynton Crosby and Mosaic Board member Shabir Randeree CBE. Fittingly, the event also heard from Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor Rt. Hon. Sadiq Khan MP. Sadiq Khan MP is not only a Mosaic Ambassador but also knew Naz Bokhari, whose memory the Foundation recognises, well as a former pupil of Ernest Bevin College at which Mr Bokhari was Head Teacher.
The event included video messages of support from the Prime Minister Rt Hon David Cameron MP, Deputy Prime Minister Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP and the Leader of the Opposition Rt Hon Ed Miliband.’
Mosaic Ambassador Rt Hon Sadiq Khan MP said: “This was a fantastic event and it was wonderful to see Princess Badiya recognised by the Naz Legacy Foundation for her work as Founder Chairman of Mosaic. It was especially poignant that the award was announced by HRH The Princes of Wales, who personally invested the late Naz Bokhari an OBE for services to education in 2001.”
